Vermeer has always fascinated me — not only for his technique, but for the quietness and intimacy he creates with so little. This study of Girl with a Pearl Earring is my way of slowing down, observing, and learning from that stillness.
I didn’t want to “recreate” the original. I wanted to understand it. The softness of the light, the subtle transitions in the skin, the calm turning of the head — all those small decisions that make Vermeer’s work feel alive.
Working on this piece reminded me how much painting is about patience and attention. Even though this is a study, it taught me things I will carry into my own work: how to let the light breathe, how to simplify, how to trust quiet moments.
I signed it “M.K.P. – after Vermeer” to acknowledge what it is: a respectful study, a conversation with a master, and a small step in my own artistic journey.
